Congratulations to our 5th graders at John Mills for completing the D.A.R.E. program! With lessons focused on decision-making and various life skills, the D.A.R.E. program educates students on how to respond to challenges and make safe choices. In this program, students participate in activities that help them handle peer pressure, understand consequences, manage stress and emotions, and build confidence. The D.A.R.E. Program is taught by Elmwood Park Police Department School Resource Officer Victor Piermattei.

On graduation day, kids filled the gymnasium as their families watched from the stands. The ceremony started with opening remarks made by Principal Frank Kuzniewski. He spoke about the overall messaging of D.A.R.E. and why it’s important for kids in our community. Afterwards, he introduced Officer Piermattei and Chief of Police Andrew Hock to speak. Their speeches were filled with gratitude for the program and the 5th grade students, making a great transition to the rest of the event.

The celebration featured a slideshow of student photos, all holding posters with lessons learned from the program. Some of these messages included the effects of alcohol and tobacco use, tips on how to report bullying, and ways to confidently communicate. As part of the ceremony, five students from each class read a pledge (about 25 students total). In a few sentences, they explained what they learned from the program and vowed to live healthy and safe lifestyles. As a reward for finishing the program, each student received a certificate of completion, a t-shirt, and a water bottle!

We are so proud of the students for showing their dedication and finishing the program strong! When we all agree to make good decisions, the community is a better place.

A special thanks goes to our John Mills 5th grade teachers, as well as Tracy Flaherty for organizing this event and slideshow.
