District Staff Focus on Literacy for Institute Day

On Monday, November 10, educators across District 401 came together for a full day of professional learning that focused on strengthening literacy instruction. The theme of the day was “Literacy Leads the Way,” with ideas based on students building strong reading, writing, and communication skills in every grade and subject area.

The day started with a keynote presentation from literacy expert Dr. Chase Young, who encouraged staff to think of themselves as “artists inspired by science” — blending research-based strategies with creativity, connection, and joy in the classroom. He demonstrated engaging exercises and activities that are specialized for student participation, excitement, and growth!

Following the presentation, teachers attended professional development sessions tailored to their grade levels and roles. These sessions covered a wide range of topics, including:

  • Writing instruction workshops
  • Phonemic awareness instruction and scaffolding strategies
  • Breakout sessions on key components of literacy
  • TCI Science and Social Studies curriculum planning
  • WIDA assessment training for English learner support
  • Progress monitoring and MTSS collaboration
  • Program alignment for enrichment
  • ACT data-informed planning

In addition to academic professional learning, each school building participated in comprehensive safety training led by both the Elmwood Park and River Grove police departments. The sessions strengthened awareness, preparedness, and shared responsibility for staff and student safety.

Institute Days like this are an important part of District 401’s ongoing work to ensure all students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally. By investing in continued training and learning, the district solidifies its commitment to high-quality instruction, safety, and overall student success.
