World Language

Elmwood Park High School's world language program, a division within the school's Fine Arts Department, offers courses in Italian and Spanish that range from introductory level to honors and Advanced Placement.

Our curriculum is aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards for World Languages, which reflect best practices for developing student proficiency in the basic communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Curriculum Goals

Specifically, these standards call for the EPHS world language curriculum to enable our students to achieve the following goals:

  • Communicating
    • Use the target language to communicate within and beyond the classroom setting.
  • Understanding
    • Use the target language to develop an understanding of the customs, arts, literature, history and geography associated with the target language.
  • Connecting
    • Use the target language to make connections and reinforce knowledge and skills across academic, vocational and technical disciplines.

The hallmark of the 21st century is interdependence across borders, which puts a premium on cultural and linguistic understanding. The EPHS world language program helps to equip our students for life in a multilingual, technologically connected global society.
