Science

The faculty of Elmwood Park High School's Science Department recognizes and embraces the responsibility of developing students who think critically, act responsibly and seek leadership roles to become successful members of society.

Because of this, we believe it is imperative that EPHS science students, through laboratory experimentation and simulation, improve their reading, writing and math analytical skills over the course of their high school experience.

A Formula for Student Success

To achieve these goals, our faculty members have created a formula for success, AE3, which students and teachers alike are expected to follow:

• Attitude
  • Come in with a positive attitude and open mind. What you give is what you get — give nothing, get nothing. The Science Department works hard to make your classes fun and interesting, but we need your help and dedication, too!
• Environment
  • This is a safe place to share ideas. Please show respect for your peers, your teachers and yourself.
• Expectation
  • We know you can achieve; you should too. Failure is OK as long as you're giving 100 percent effort. We like to say, "If you’re going to fail, fail forward!" Sometimes failure can be the best learning experience a person can have. Never give up!
• Energy
  • By definition, energy is the ability to do work. So, work hard and be a valuable member of your lab group. Science is fun — bring some positive energy to class. We promise to do the same!

We put this formula to work every day in our state-of-the-art classrooms, where students build and refine their scientific proficiency in a laboratory setting.

Illinois Science Assessment

In compliance with federal testing requirements, Illinois administers a science assessment to students enrolled in public school districts in grades 5, 8 and once at the high school level.

The high school assessment uses a course-based model with content aligned to Biology I. The assessment is administered during the spring in an online format.
